Dr. Michael G. Rayel— author of  First Aid to Mental Illness and Mental Health First Aid Webinar— is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Faculty of Medicine, Discipline of Psychiatry.


He is currently the Chief of the Department of Psychiatry, Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Eastern health located in Canada.


In addition to being certified in Advanced Clinical Psychopharmacology (ASCP), he is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with subspecialty certifications in Forensic and Geriatric Psychiatry, and Psychosomatic Medicine.


As a lecturer and seminar leader, he has trained students, residents, and health care workers on various mental health issues including First Aid for Mental Health.


Dr. Rayel has pioneered and conceptualized the CARE approach as a first aid methodology for mental health. In his book  First Aid to Mental Illness  (named Finalist, Reader’s Preference Choice Award 2002), he advances the implementation of practical strategies and early intervention to deal with mental illness. He will offer the First Aid Mental Health Webinar soon to educate the public on relevant mental health issues.


Moreover, Dr. Rayel’s oral psychiatry review books and ebooks  Successful Preparation for the Psychiatry Oral Exam, Passing Strategies, and Clinical Vignettes and Modules have been widely received and have helped hundreds of examinees deal with the exam hurdle. He is also the author of upcoming book The Art of Empathy: Psychiatric Interview for Health Care Professionals which will be available in 2009-2010.


As one of few psychiatrists in North America with expertise and training in both Geriatric and Forensic Psychiatry, he has published pertinent literature and won significant awards for his work.


Furthermore, Dr. Rayel has pioneered the use of webinars to share information on mental health and personal development issues. Aside from psychiatry board review web courses, he also offers EQ Webinars: Emotional Intelligence and Effective Parenting and Emotional Intelligence for Personal and Career Success.

Dr. Rayel trained in General Psychiatry and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy at New York Medical College, Geriatric Psychiatry at New York University Medical Center, and Forensic and Correctional Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
